Twitter chats: what they are, how to use them and which ones your brand should be involved in

Twitter chats. What are they?

A Twitter chat is, first and foremost, exactly what it sounds like: a chat that takes place on Twitter. It’s created and engaged with via the use of an exclusive hashtag, so if you want to get involved, you simply tweet your message with that hashtag while it’s happening. You can also engage with what other people are saying by clicking on the hashtag and sorting your tweets by “Latest” to see what’s being discussed.

Most Twitter chats have a host and their own rules. Usually they last for an hour with a specific start/end time (which you can usually discover via the host’s bio). They can also be structured, where the host asks questions for you to answer or poses certain topics of discussion.

Not all chats are organised, however. Others have a very laissez-faire approach: taking course over an entire day, for instance, or remaining “topic-less” so you can tweet about whatever you want (so long as it suits the chat’s purpose, that is!).

Trust us – they’re worth your time

There are plenty of perks to getting chatty! For one thing, Twitter chats are always tailored to a specific audience – so if you find one (or several) that are relevant to you, getting involved is a great way to put your brand in the spotlight. You can also learn from thought leaders in your field and strike valuable connections that could prove useful to your brand later down the line.
